    More than 150 entries describe causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of sports injuries for amateur and professional athletes. he bibliography lists sports-medicine journals and texts as well as a few more popular titles, many dated 2003. Appendixes include safety tips and nutrition for particular sports; common sports injuries; training tips for runners and cyclists; international associations of trainers; and sports-medicine schools, journals, and Web sites.

    The food pyramid is clearly explained and food labels are deciphered line by line. Related topics include diseases that are associated with nutrition, such as osteoporosis and rickets, and health organizations. A global perspective is maintained throughout the work, with articles provided on the diets of geographic and ethnic groups worldwide. This is a good overview tool for personalities associated with nutrition, such as early vitamin researcher Casimir Funk and "King of the Road" Howard Deering Johnson. It is also a good source for information on current topics, such as Glycemic index, the potentially deadly Female athlete triad, and Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

    Offers authoritative essays on the lives and achievements of more than 600 athletes, coaches, team owners, sportscasters and writers. Their home run records, longest passes and fastest miles are all here, along with concise descriptions of each subject's childhood, family life, education and rise to fame. Each signed article places its subject in historical context. Photos of most subjects, bibliographies and an index by sport make this set comprehensive and easy to use.

    This two volume encyclopedia is a valuable reference tool for researching the science--the physics, the medicine, and so on--involved with the world of sports.
  • Fitness and exercise sourcebook. 1996. Ref 613.7 F58H
    Provides basic information about the numerous physical and emotional benefits of exercise and explores the relationship between nutrition, physical activity, and athletic performance. Tips about general physical fitness, as well as specific exercises. Issues surrounding exercise in children, adolescents, pregnant women, and seniors are discussed, as are the physical activity needs of people with health conditions such as asthma, high blood pressure, heart disease, and arthritis. Also covers tips for buying exercise equipment.
  • Encyclopedia of North American sports. 1992. Ref 796 H52e
    Focuses on the evolution of sports, sports government, administration, and other issues of interest pertaining to sports in North America. Entries are arranged alphabetically and vary in length from 25 to 3000 words. The contents are divided into several broad categories ranging from history, biography, and key events to awards, cities, stadiums, and organizations. Included is an index, bibliography, see also notes, and photographs.
  • Sports rules encyclopedia. 1990. Ref 796 Sp67Wh
    A comprehensive source of sports rules, many of which are the "official" set of rules supplied by the governing body for that sport, for the coach or administrator.

    Abstracts and indexing for nearly 520+ titles relating to general health, nutrition, and professional health care. Full-text available online for 240+ titles and nearly 1,000 health-related pamphlets. No full text.
  • Medline
    Covers all areas of medicine, including clinical medicine, nursing, sports medicine, nutrition, and more), and provides indexing for 3,500 journals published internationally. Citations from 1965-present, including abstracts since 1975. No full text.
  • Physical Education Index
    Indexes articles on dance, health, physical education, physical therapy, sports, and sports medicine and many related topics. No full text.
