The following resources have been compiled by the librarians with specific regard to the field of Modern Languages.

Reference Books


French language materials can be found in the 442-448 call number range.

  • Dictionnaire des synonymes. 2001. Ref 443 G28d
    A perfect reference tool for the student or general user learning the shades of meaning and nuances of the French language. Numerous example sentences show words in context, allowing the user to choose the best word to suit the intended meaning. Other features include - an easy-to-navigate A-to-Z format - labels indicating whether a word or expression is colloquial or formal, to ensure appropriate usage - notes on potentially confusing words that are similar in meaning - a clean, readable design.

    French etymological history of words, phrases, etc.
  • Littre's Dictionnaire de la langue francaise. 1970. 7 volumes. Ref 443 L73
    Standard classic resource for the study of the French language.

German language materials can be found in the 430-438 range.

  • Oxford-Duden German dictionary. 2005. Ref 433.21 Ox22G
  • Handbook of German etymology. 2003. Ref 430 Or34h
    Gives etymological history of German words, phrases, etc.
  • Oxford companion to German literature. 1976. Ref 830.3 G18o
    Obviously a bit dated, and yet, good source for historical German literature.

Spanish language materials can be found in the 460-469 range.

  • Diccionario de la lengua espanola. 2001. Ref 463 D54
    Spanish dictionary
  • Oxford companion to Spanish literature. 1978. Ref 860.3 Ox2
    Dated, yet good for classic Spanish literature.

    • Find books, as well as a variety of other materials in the TU Libraries.
    • Use the Advanced search option to specify material format, campus, language, and date range.

    • Find books, among other things, to request via Interlibrary Loan (ILL).

Finding Articles:

  • ClasePeriodica
    Indexes documents published in Latin American journals specializing in the social sciences and humanities, as well as covering journals specializing in science and technology. Provides access to more than 300,000 bibliographic citations from documents published in 2,600 scholarly journals published in the Spanish, Portuguese, French and English languages. Contains information from articles, essays, book reviews, monographs, conference proceedings, technical reports, interviews and brief notes published in journals edited in 24 different countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as from publications that focus on Pan-American issues.
  • Handbook of Latin American Studies (HLAS Online)
    A multidisciplinary bibliography covering key resources in the humanities and social sciences of Latin America, HLAS is compiled and annotated by scholars from around the world.
  • Informe (also in Spanish version)
    Provides indexing and full-text for 50 Spanish-language and bilingual periodicals, newspapers, and pamphlets. Includes popular titles such as Actual, Latina, Siempre!, and El Nuevo Herald. Content is indexed and cross-referenced with a Spanish-language thesaurus and features both Spanish and English versions. 1995 to present.
  • MLA International Bibliography
    Indexes over 4,000 scholarly journals and series in the fields of literature, language, linguistics, and folklore. Includes citations, but no abstracts.

Periodicals

    Search by journal title keyword for online full-text journals, and to see what we have in print in the library.

Click on the blue links to enter the actual list of titles. The numbers in parentheses beside the subject indicate how many journal titles are included in that subject area. Look for specific languages or the study of linguistics, however your topic breaksdown in the field of Language Studies to find more specific journals.

Research Tools

  • RefWorks
    A citation management program that allows you to collect and organize citations, create bibliographies and works cited pages, and format papers and bibliographies to a specific citation style.
  • CREDO Reference (formerly xreferplus)
    A conglomeration of specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias that allows you to search for definitions and encyclopedia articles, as well as develop ideas for expanding or refining a research strategy.
