The following resources have been compiled by the librarians with
specific regard to the field of Geography.
Reference Books
- Oxford companion to world exploration. 2007. 2 volumes. Ref 910.922 Ox22B
Covering all aspects of global explorations, from antarctica to the North Pole,
it examines the lives and expeditions of heroic and influential explorers. Scope ranges
from the ancient cultures of Egypt, Persia, Greece, Byzantium, China, Polynesia, and Rome,
through to modern space exploration. The articles have been written by leading scholars
from across the globe, utilizing the most current scholarship in the field of exploration
studies.

- Worldmark encyclopedia of the nations. 2001. 6 volumes. Ref 910.3 W89
Presents easy-to-understand information on 200 countries and dependencies
from around the world. Entries discuss a variety of topics in detail, from banking
and securities to climate, from government data to demographic statistics. Also
includes biographical essays on national leaders.
- Columbia gazetteer of the world. 1998. 3 volumes. Ref 910.3 C72
"An unmatched summation of the geographic contents of our world." The best resource
"for data ranging from absolute and relative location to history and current population,
from political status to economic prospects, from ethnicity to toponomy."
- Merriam Webster's geographical dictionary. 1997. Ref 910.321 M55
Offers 48,000 detailed entires on everything from towns to continents. It is an excellent
source for geographical and historical information about places around the globe.
- Worldmark encyclopedia of the states. 1995. Ref 910.73 W89
Covering every state in the US plus Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia and the
US Caribbean dependencies, this reference provides information on state demographic
figures, economic data, historical facts, politics and society. Within each entry,
topics covered include: arts, communications, environmental protection, housing,
income, libraries and museums, religions, sport, tourism and travel. The text also
provides details of each state's song, bird, map and flag.

Covers the worldwide literature of geography, geology, ecology, and related disciplines
with indexing and abstracts for journals, books, conference proceedings, and reports. Over 2,000
journals are fully indexed; 3,000 selectively indexed. 1980-present.

LexisNexis Environmental
Covers a wide range of today’s key environmental issues from a diverse collection of
source types, on topics including: energy, air pollution, toxicology, land use and pollution,
water pollution, wildlife/biodiversity, population/sustainable development, global warming,
waste management, and agriculture.

JSTOR
JSTOR (Journal STORage) presents the searchable full text of the complete
back files for over 100 important scholarly journals. Coverage generally includes the
first volume through issues published prior to the most recent 3-5 years
(current issues are not available in JSTOR). Also search JSTOR via
Google Scholar by including "+JSTOR" in the search.

Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO)
Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO) is the most comprehensive
source for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide
range of scholarship from 1991 onward that includes working papers from university
research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research
projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs. CIAO is
also widely-recognized source for teaching materials including original case studies
written by leading international affairs experts, course packs of background readings
for history and political science classes, and special features like the analysis of
a bin Laden recruitment tape with video.

CountryWatch
Provides up-to-date information and news on the countries of the world in a
concise and useful form. Includes cultural, political, economic, and business
information and maps.

Search by journal title keyword for online full-text journals, and to see what
we have in print in the library.

to enter the actual list of titles. The numbers in parentheses beside the subject
indicate how many journal titles are included in that subject area. This search includes
geography, anthropology, as well as recreation, so be sure to scan through the subdivisions
to find specific topics of interest.

Geography Resources: Journals
A list of links to electronic journals, web versions of print journals, and other
sites of journals related to the study of geography.
- Federal Geographic Data Committee
An interagency committee that promotes the coordinated development, use, sharing,
and dissemination of geospatial data on a national basis. Under the Data & Services section
on the left hand menu, are searches for geospatial data and searching the NSDI Clearinghouse
network. An interesting resource to see how geographic information is organized and disseminated
on a national level.
- Geography Websites
Created and maintained by the Head of Geogrpahy at Radley College in the UK, this site
offers a variety of links to topics under the broad heading of Geography. Divided by subdivisions of
Environment, General, Human Geography, Physical Geography, Weather and Climate, etc.
Research Tools
- RefWorks
A citation management program that allows you to collect and organize citations, create bibliographies and works cited pages,
and format papers and bibliographies to a specific citation style.

CREDO Reference (formerly xreferplus)
A conglomeration of specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias that allows you
to search for definitions and encyclopedia articles, as well as develop ideas for
expanding or refining a research strategy.
