The following resources have been compiled by the librarians with specific regard to the field of Education.

Reference Books

• Encyclopedia of learning disabilities. 2006. Ref 371.9 En19L
  The approximately 600 entries are written for understanding and clarity, never hiding behind unnecessary jargon while remaining professional in tone. Learning-disorder descriptions, contributing issues, and management have a vocabulary derived from education, psychology, anatomy, physiology, medicine, and sociology, if not more. Six very useful appendices and a bibliography for more study.
• Encyclopedia of education and human development. 2005. 3 volumes. Ref 370.3 En19F
  provides comprehensive coverage of educational theory and practice from the primary grades through higher education. The set integrates numerous theoretical frameworks with field-based applications from many years in educational research, and features contributions from respected specialists in education, psychology, sociology, philosophy, law, and medicine.
• International encyclopedia of adult education. 2005. Ref 374 In82A
  A comprehensive reference work in this important and fast-growing field, and is an invaluable resource for adult educators who research and teach in the fields of higher education, work in community-based settings, or practise in public or private organizations. Its 170+ articles, written by an international team of contributors from over 17 countries, detail the research and practice of the field from its emergence as a separate discipline to the present day, covering key concepts, issues and individuals and providing a cutting-edge summary of ongoing debates across a wide range of perspectives, from self-directed learning to human resource development.
• Teacher certification requirements in all fifty states. 2003-2004. Ref 371.12 B69t
  Explains how and where to get a teaching certificate in all fifty states.
• Encyclopedia of education. 2003. 8 volumes. Ref 370 En19
  Offers a view of the most significant institutions, people, processes, roles, and philosophies associated with educational thought and practice. Entries include 121 biographies of influential educators; profiles of historic colleges and universities; discussions of educational policies, judicial decisions, and legislation; and descriptions of organizations active in the field.
• World education encyclopedia: a survey of educational systems worldwide. 2002. 3 volumes. Ref 370.3 W89
  More than 225 countries are included, among them "new" countries of the former Soviet Union and territories and departments such as Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico, and Saint Helena. Entries begin with the history of the country followed by the constitutional and legal foundations of the education system; an overview of the educational system; and sections on preprimary, primary, secondary, and higher education; administration, finance, and educational research; the profession of teaching; and a summary. One appendix ranks countries by public expenditures on education, literacy rate by sex, number of teachers, etc. Appendix 2 has regional maps of the countries of the world. The index is useful in helping to compare different attributes by country--academic year, grading, life skills training, etc.
• Encyclopedia of American education. 2001. 3 volumes. 370.973 Un31
  Covers the entire span of American education from the colonial period to the present. Containing more than 2,000 entries, this three-volume work provides a wealth of information on virtually every aspect of education, from the evolution of school curriculum, education funding, and church-state controversies to the latest debates on multiculturalism, prayer in school, and sex education. Updated appendixes, including an extensive bibliography for each subject area; a general chronology of American education since 1607; a summary of significant federal education legislation since 1787; a listing of every major U.S. Supreme Court decision affecting education - including eight new rulings handed down since the first edition was published; and a listing of graduate school offerings in education, undergraduate education majors, and undergraduate majors at American colleges.

Education materials are shelved in the call number section of the 370's in both the Reference and Main Collections. Teacher resources, for student teaching and classroom prep, may be found in the Curriculum Resource Center, which is located on the Main Level behind the ZonLab (computer lab).

Finding Articles:

• ERIC
  Covers all aspects of education. Links to the online full-text of most ERIC documents from 1993 to the present are now available. Offers citations and abstracts to journal articles and resources related to the field of education. Indexes curriculum materials, teaching guides, lesson plans, program descriptions, research reports, conference proceedings, plus articles from over 800 educational and education-related journals from 1966 to present.
• Professional Development Collection
  Covers all areas of education. Includes abstracts and indexing for 345 professional development titles. Full-text for over 430 journals covering the most current topics in the field of education.
• JSTOR
  JSTOR (Journal STORage) presents the searchable full text of the complete back files for over 100 important scholarly journals. Coverage generally includes the first volume through issues published prior to the most recent 3-5 years (current issues are not available in JSTOR). Includes journals for the following disciplines: African-American studies, anthropology, Asian studies, ecology, economics, education, finance, history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, political science, population studies, sociology, and statistics. Also search JSTOR via Google Scholar by including "+JSTOR" in the search.
• MasterFile Premier
  Provides abstracts and indexing for more than 3,200 periodicals on a variety of subjects, including education. Full-text available online for 1,500 titles, with some dating back to 1990.

Children's Resources: K-12

• Primary Search
  Level: Primary school focus for wide range of topics. Abstracts and indexing for over 120 magazines. Full-text available online for 40+ children's magazines, plus full-text for over 100 pamphlets. Also features the Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, the World Almanac for Kids, and the World Almanac of the USA. Designed for elementary school libraries and public library children's rooms.
• Middle Search PLUS
  Level: Middle-school focus for wide range of topics. Abstracts and indexing for 170 magazines. Full-text available online for over 50 frequently used titles, plus full-text for 115+ pamphlets. Designed for middle schools, K-8 and large elementary schools.
• MAS Ultra - School Edition
  Level: High school and junior college level, all general interest areas. Provides abstracts and indexing for over 500 general interest and research periodicals and the New York Times. Full-text available online for 200+ titles from 1990 to present.

• The Educator's reference desk
  Includes more than 2,000 lesson plans and 3,000 links to online educational information Searching features allow narrowing to specific grade level, subject categories, etc.
• FREE--Federal resources for educational excellence
  Offers access to electronic resources regarding education produced by 49 federal agencies. Resources are grouped by broad subjects including Art, Educational Technology, Foreign Languages, Health and Safety, Language Arts, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, and Vocational Education. Also check out The Gateway to Educational Materials sponsored by the Dept. of Education. It includes federal, state, university, nonprofit, and commercial educational resources.
• Lesson plans library
  Lesson plans and support materials are available, grouped by themes, grades and subject matter. Plans created by classroom teachers and freelance curriculum writers.
• Online directory of ESL resources
  Provides some of the best ESL resources on the web in a searchable format by keyword or topic or resource type.
• NSDL: the National Science Digital Library
  "Funded by the National Science Foundation, this portal is designed to create an online library of 'high quality resource and tools that support innovation in teaching and learning at all levels of science, technology, engineering, and matehmatics education.'" Search by topic, form of media, and grade level for relevant materials.
• Teacher Resource Center--Journal Information for K-12 Teachers & Librarians
  An EBSCO database provided for free, this index of over 260 titles from the most popular teacher and administrator trade journals, periodicals, and books. This database provides coverage on key education topics such as Assessment, Continuing Education, Current Pedagogical Research, Curriculum Development, Instructional Media, Language Arts, Literacy Standards, Science and Mathematics, and more.

Research Tools

• RefWorks
  A citation management program that allows you to collect and organize citations, create bibliographies and works cited pages, and format papers and bibliographies to a specific citation style.
• CREDO Reference (formerly xreferplus)
  A conglomeration of specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias that allows you to search for definitions and encyclopedia articles, as well as develop ideas for expanding or refining a research strategy.
