The following resources have been compiled by the librarians with
specific regard to the field of Chemistry.
Reference Books
- CRC handbook of chemistry and physics. 2006-2007. Ref 540 C42
Includes such things as the physical properties of inorganic compounds,
enthalpy of fusion, bond dissociation energies, table of isotopes, inorganic
ion and ligand nomenclature, chemical carcinogens, and traces the global temperature
trends over the past 150 years.
- The Merck index: an encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs, and biologicals. 2006. Ref 615.103 M53 2006
The Merck Index is a one-volume encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs and biologicals that contains
more than 10,000 monographs. Each monograph in this authoritative reference source is a concise
description of a single substance or a small group of closely related compounds.
- The Facts on File chemistry handbook. 2006. Ref 540 F11C
With almost 1,500 glossary entries, this work covers 125 important advances in chemistry, provides
complete list of Nobel Prize winners in chemistry, as well as their biographical information, important
chemical association information, and a list of Web sites for further reference.
- Lange's handbook of chemistry. 2005. Ref 540 L26S
features an enormous compilation of facts, data, tabular material, and experimental
findings in every area of chemistry. Included in this massive compendium are listings of
the properties of approximately 4,400 organic and 1,400 inorganic compounds.
- CRC handbook of basic tables for chemical analysis. 2003. Ref 543 B83c
Explanation
- Oxford dictionary of biochemistry and molecular biology. 2000. Ref 572.03 Ox25
Includes topics and methods, chemical substances, and brief biographical entries
of key scientists. The only illustrations are structure diagrams of the more complex
chemical compounds. Appendixes help the reader understand scientific nomenclature and
Greek symbols, list organizations and Web sites of interest in the field, and cover current
hot topics in biochemistry.
Finding Books:
-
Online Catalog
- Find books, as well as a variety of other materials in the TU Libraries.
- Use the Advanced search option to specify material format, campus, language, and date range.
- WorldCat
- Listed under Essential Tools.
- Find books, among other things, to request via Interlibrary Loan (ILL).
Finding Articles:
-
American Chemical Society Publications Journal Search
Combining two online resources from the American Chemical Society (ACS) into one search
interface, ACS Web Editions and ACS Journal Archives, this database provides full text access
to the articles from over thirty important chemistry journals from their inception (some from
as far back as the late 1800s) to the present.
-
Chemical Abstracts
Covers chemical sciences as well as biological, engineering, and physical sciences.
Indexing and abstracting of over 68,000 serial and nonserial source publications from 1907
to the present. Available after 5 p.m. Please see a librarian for assistance.
-
BasicBIOSIS
Good in subjects including biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, botany, ecology, genetic engineering,
genetics, microbiology, etc. Offers information on recent developments in 96 subject areas of the
biological and biomedical sciences with indexing for 350+ core life sciences journals.
Covers the last 3 years to present.
-
BIOSIS Preview (See Librarian to use this database.)
BIOSIS (see BasicBIOSIS above) expanded retrospectively.
-
Agricola
Indexes resources in agriculture, chemistry, the life sciences representing the
holdings of the National Agricultural Library. 1970 to present.
Periodicals
-
Taylor Periodical Title List
Search by journal title keyword for online full-text journals, and to see what
we have in print in the library.
Chemistry Subject Search in the Periodical List to find out what journals
(and how many) we have available both in print and online. Click on the blue links
to enter the actual list of titles. The numbers in parentheses beside the subject
indicate how many journal titles are included in that subject area. This search includes
all sciences, but has a subdivision for Chemistry under the "C's" alphabetically.
Internet Resources
- ChemWeb
ChemWeb.com provides access to the information chemists need to enhance
their research, product development, self-development, education, and/or their
businesses in Chemistry and related disciplines. Easy access to abstracts, papers,
books, conferences, news, forums and the Alchemist newsletter makes ChemWeb.com
useful to our members. If you are not a member - join now - membership is free
and takes just a minute to register.
- ChemNet Interactive Periodic Table
While most of the Chemical databases avialable from ChemNet are for institutions only,
this particular Periodic table is free and provides a wealth of information on each element.
- NIST Chemistry WebBook
(National Institute of Standards and Technology)
Provides users with easy access to chemical and physical property data
for chemical species through the internet. The data provided in the site are from
collections maintained by the NIST Standard Reference Data Program and outside contributors.
Data in the WebBook system are organized by chemical species. The WebBook system allows
users to search for chemical species by various means. Once the desired species has been
identified, the system will display data for the species. Easy to understand menu and navigation.
- WebElements Scholar
Aims to be a high quality source of information on the web about the periodic table for
students. Provides many pictures showing element structures and periodic properties. Very current.
- Best chemistry web sites: Education and government sites
Divided up into sections: Online courseware/tutorials; Databases/databanks of chemical information; Tools; Non-academic/
government sites; Old standards. Some of the links don't work, but most do and it has great potential for chemical research information.
Research Tools
- RefWorks
A citation management program that allows you to collect and organize citations, create bibliographies and works cited pages,
and format papers and bibliographies to a specific citation style.
-
CREDO Reference (formerly xreferplus)
A conglomeration of specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias that allows you
to search for definitions and encyclopedia articles, as well as develop ideas for
expanding or refining a research strategy.
Citation Help
